What Are The Pros & Cons Of Truck Hire?

Let's kick things off

Where are you located?

Moving house is a run of twists and turns depending on the route you take. While it’s been done for centuries, there’s still no bonafide best method to moving house, often relying on personal choice and budget to determine how your style of moving works.

One burning question that divides movers is should you leave it to a removalist company, or should you DIY it and pick up a rental truck for the trip?

Many would immediately pick sides once the question was asked, but for those sitting on the fence, here are all the pros and cons that need to be heard about moving truck hire.

The Pros

There are plenty of upsides if you’re looking to go through the truck rental route, with many in Australia opting to follow this route for years.

Hiring a truck is the ultimate DIY moving tool, providing ample cubic metre moving space that a standard car can’t provide. The lifting bed (hydraulic lift) of a truck allows for heavy items (i.e. fridges, couches, etc.) to easily make their way into the truck and not break a lifter’s back doing so.

As opposed to using a removalist company, hiring a truck allows for independence and trust in your own packing abilities, while saving a pretty penny doing so. Hiring a truck and moving allows the freedom to move things at your own pace and pack items the way you intend to, providing more comfort and ease of mind that your belongings will stay safe.

Most truck hire services offer small trucks that can be driven with a regular car license too, so the concern of taking truck driving lessons isn’t needed. While a small truck may concern those with a lot to move, in addition to regular commercial vehicles available (or your uncle’s ute), moving can be both cost-effective and efficient.

The Cons

While DIY is cost-efficient, it’s not always the best course of action for those with no time on their hands.

Moving home is a stressful period with all the packing loading and planning involved, so adding in the time to hire a truck and pack can be a hassle and exhausting, especially if you’re already squeamish about driving a truck full of your valuables from point A to point B.

There is reason to be squeamish, as hire company trucks are not covered by insurance, so any damages that occur to the vehicle whilst in your hire or any damages to your belongings are all at your own cost (so maybe don’t ask your friend with the greasy fingers to hold the fine china).

Some truck hire services also require a truck driver’s license to operate a multi-tonne truck (3-tonne truck). In this instance, opting for a small vehicle hire (vehicle rental) or even a van hire (van rental) may be the better option should there be no small removal truck hire available.
