What is the difference between 5G home internet & nbn broadband?

The National Broadband Network (NBN co) links you to the internet through Australia’s fixed-line and fixed-wireless infrastructure. Meanwhile, 5G Home Internet delivers wireless internet access without relying on physical cables.

Typically, NBN offers a speedy and dependable connection, now spanning approximately 99% of Australian households through the NBN rollout. On the other hand, while 5G Home Internet boasts rapid connectivity, its coverage is still expanding and may be limited in certain regions.

Both NBN broadband and 5G Home Internet are capable of supporting numerous devices and are available through MyConnect’s partners.

What types of internet connections are there?

From NBN to satellite and of course wi-fi, there are several types of internet services and connection types.

This can range from networks like:

  • Fibre internet (both FTTB & FTTP)
  • Cable
  • ADSL
  • Wireless internet (wi-fi network)
  • Satellite
  • Mobile networks

How can I improve internet speed?

While it’s not possible to directly increase your internet download speed, there are troubleshooting strategies to optimise your broadband connection.

  • Minimise the number of devices connected to the internet simultaneously. Consider disabling Wi-Fi on devices like tablets when they’re not in use to avoid bandwidth sharing with active devices.
  • Assess your internet usage times. Avoid downloading/uploading or streaming large files during peak hours (typically 7 PM-11 PM). Alternatively, setting up an ethernet cable can help improve your megabits per second (Mbps).
  • Close background applications that may be running. Even when idle, these applications can consume bandwidth through background refresh processes, depleting your available bandwidth.
  • Check your modem settings. Simple adjustments, such as disabling “Quality of Service” or modifying your Wi-Fi channel frequency, can significantly improve the performance of the router.
  • If you have NBN, explore the possibility of upgrading your broadband plan/nbn plan. MyConnect can help you connect to an internet service provider (ISP) through one easy phone call on 1300 187 449.
Will I need a new modem connecting to a new plan?

Whether or not you need to do this depends on the internet plan you go for. With NBN, it’s pretty common for providers to let you bring your modem, as long as it works with their service. But if you’re getting home wireless broadband, switching home internet plans usually means getting a new modem every time for your new connection.
