How do I find my gas meter?

At a house, gas meter locations can be found outside of the house, either down the side of the property or in the front or backyard, or under the kitchen sink.

At apartments or multi-dwellings, gas meters are often stored together in one central area such as a meter room. Often, the body corporate or building manager will be able to assist you in accessing these.

For more information on gas meter installations, head over to our article all about Gas Meters.

Can you do same day connections?

The latest time electricity and gas distributors can receive a connection request is midday for a next-day connection. In certain areas, we can arrange same-day connections.

If you need to sort out your gas service connection, please note that natural gas supply can take 2 – 3 business days, so it’s best to call us as soon as possible to avoid any extra charges.

To streamline your gas connection process, please call us on 1300 187 449 to see how we can help get you connected!

How do I read my gas meter?

There are 2 different meter types in Australia – metric meters, which display the units of gas in cubic metres (M3), and imperial gas meters, which display the units in cubic feet (ft3).

The most common type of meter you will find in new homes is a metric meter. It will either be an odometer or a digital display.

Metric gas meters

All digits are to be read from left to right, including any zeros that appear at the beginning.

Note: Any numbers in red that appear after a comma or decimal point on an odometer are for testing purposes and should be ignored.

Imperial gas meters

Imperial gas meters are in the process of being phased out, but some older households may still have them compared to the new meters.

To take a reading, you need to note the number on each clock face, from left to right. If the pointer is between 2 numbers, record the lower number. When the pointer is between 0 and 9, record 9.

The additional dials labelled ½ and 2 can be ignored as these are not used to calculate your meter reading.

The reading will be in cubic feet, which are then converted to cubic metres on your bill.

What is a gas meter number and a MIRN?

Just like your phone has a serial number to identify it, and a mobile number to record your usage, a gas meter has a unique meter number to identify the address where the gas is being supplied, and a MIRN to ensure you are billed correctly for your usage on your next energy bill.

You can find your Gas Meter Number on your gas meter. In most cases, above or below a barcode, most commonly in the format of numbers and letters (for example, 1234AB or AB123456).

You can find your MIRN on your meter or your gas supply bill. It will be 10 or 11 digits long. For more information on your gas meter, check out our Gas Meter video.

What do I do if the gas isn't running at my house?

Here’s how to troubleshoot your natural gas connection.

Step 1 – Locate your gas meter.

Step 2 – Check that the lever is parallel to the pipes.

Step 3 – Test gas appliances inside the property (eg, hot water, stovetop).

If the gas is still not running, you can contact your gas retailer to investigate a potential issue with the Australian gas network or service line. If you’d like to arrange a new gas connection, click here to get connected.

Do I need to be home for a connection?

In most cases, you don’t need to be at the new address for the connection to go ahead, as long as there is clear access to your meter and your main switch is in the off position if the power is set for disconnection.

However, there are some cases where you need to be at the property for your new connection if the supply has been disconnected.

If you live in Victoria (VIC), New South Wales (NSW), Queensland (QLD), or South Australia (SA), you may need to be home on the connection date and wait for the technician to reconnect the power safely.
